Introduction
The Probation Services and Restorative Justice Branch of the Correctional Services Division supervises offenders in the community (Probation, Conditional Sentences, youth orders, temporary absences, bail, restorative justice/diversions) and writes report for the Courts per year. The Indigenous Traditional Ceremony Providers will work with Indigenous Clients in all areas of this work towards reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the justice system. The Probation Services and Restorative Justice Branch is seeking to fill 5new vacancies in various areas of the province (Winnipeg, Thompson, Brandon and The Pas).
Duties:
The Indigenous Traditional Ceremony Provider is a member of the team responsible for providing opportunities for both inmates and staff to gain knowledge and understanding of Indigenous traditions and teachings. The incumbent reports directly under the administrative supervision of a Community Area Director for coordination and delivery of services and the professional guidance of the Divisional Director of Indigenous Cultural and Spiritual Services. As a member of the Spiritual Caregivers' team, the Indigenous Traditional Ceremony Provider will conduct appropriate ceremonies and other spiritual activities, will be present and visible throughout the Probation and Restorative Justice Offices and provide individual, group and family counselling. The successful candidate will promote positive healthy change to help reduce the risk of recidivism and reoffending through the teaching of Indigenous culture, philosophy, practices and the holistic approach to life. These positions will work closely with correctional centers and the forthcoming healing lodges in Brandon and The Pas.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Experience providing sweat ceremonies and spiritual activities within an Indigenous community
- Experience in providing culturally appropriate counseling
- Provide timely and effective services to a large caseload
- Ability to effectively problem solve various sensitive situations and maintain confidentiality
- Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to speak with internal and external stakeholders (Indigenous
- communities/organizations, Elders, Supervisors, Probation Officers, Corrections workers and other Spiritual Care Givers)
Desired:
- Experience working with Indigenous people in conflict with the law
- Ability to communicate in an Indigenous language
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Must provide and maintain satisfactory Child Abuse and Adult Abuse Registry Checks
- Must be able to provide a satisfactory Enhanced Security Screening Level 4
- Must be willing and able to work in various settings including indoor and outdoor environments
- Must provide and maintain a full class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License
