NETES is a not-for-profit Indigenous organization supporting the success of Indigenous people in Winnipeg. We offer adult education, skills training and employment services, along with wrap-around services such as daycare, student housing, and health and wellness programming. The Opportunity
Kookum’s Place is an Indigenous-led, community-centred early learning program dedicated to supporting children and families through relationship-based care that honours Indigenous culture, values, and ways of knowing. Our approach is rooted in respect, connection, and belonging, with a strong emphasis on play-based and land-based learning.
We are seeking a dependable, caring and community-minded Cook to join our team. This role plays an important part in supporting our children’s overall health, well-being and daily experience within the daycare environment. At Kookum’s Place, we believe food, care and community are deeply connected. Our Cook supports children through healthy meal preparation, positive teamwork, and a warm environment where children feel valued, supported, and cared for each day.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve nutritious meals and snacks for children in accordance with the Canadian Food Guide and MELCC guidelines.
- Plan and prepare rotating menus while considering allergies, dietary restrictions, and nutritional requirements.
- Maintain safe food handling, kitchen sanitation, and cleaning practices at all times.
- Monitor kitchen inventory, food supplies, and grocery orders as required.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen, storage and food preparation areas.
- Record food substitutions, allergies and meal-related information as required.
- Support a safe, welcoming, and healthy childcare environment.
- Assist with housekeeping, laundry, and general childcare support duties as required.
- Work collaboratively with childcare staff and contribute to a positive team environment.
- Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety, and WHMIS standards.
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and respectful communication with children, families and staff.
- Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Current Food Handlers Certificate
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check required.
Experience
- Experience working in food preparation, childcare or a related environment preferred.
- Experience preparing meals for children or large groups is considered an asset.
- Experience working within Indigenous communities or culturally diverse environments is considered an asset.

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40lbs. as required.
Additional Requirements
NETES requires a clear and satisfactory Criminal Record Check before employment begins. All checks must be dated within three (3) months of the start date.
