POSITION TYPE TERM, FULL-TIME

DUTIES

Reporting to the Manager, Student Counselling Services (SCS), and as a member of the SCS team, the Counsellor provides professional counselling to all RRC students, both on-campus and online, in a safe, accessible, equitable and culturally responsive environment to optimize students’ personal, academic and overall well-being. Using goal focused counselling modalities and a trauma informed approach, the Counsellor conducts intake and follow up appointments, drop-in counselling, crisis intervention and management, risk assessment, and critical incident debriefings. The counselling role includes collaborating with staff, faculty, administrators and external service providers as needed; and creating innovative programming to meet the evolving needs of students, to optimize student success and retention. The successful candidate develops and delivers psychoeducational workshops, and presentations to faculty on how to proactively recognize and respond to students in distress. The hours of work for this position currently range between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. with the possibility of evening hours in the future. The incumbent is expected to work at the Exchange District Campus location.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in Social Work or Counselling/Psychology; a combination of experience and education may be considered
  • Several years of experience in a counselling environment including case management responsibilities Experience in personal counselling, provision of mental health services and crisis intervention Knowledge and experience practicing student/person centered and strengths-based therapeutic modalities
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics or other applicable Professional Association
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and trust with students and proactively develop relationships with members of the College community
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in crisis situations and to successfully navigate complex situations
  • Strong organization and time management skills to respond effectively to multiple demands and manage a large caseload
  • Experience in developing and delivering psycho-educational workshops to groups of students on topics relevant to personal/emotional growth
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications and adept at learning new software
  • Experience building a respectful workplace culture that promotes diversity, learning and continuous improvement

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment

  • This position may be required to work evenings and/or weekends
  • This position may be required to work overtime
  • Incumbent must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Records Check, including a Vulnerable Persons Sector Check
  • Incumbent must provide a current and satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check
  • Must be able to work on campus as required
  • Membership in a relevant professional association, or eligibility to acquire
  • May be required to work at various RRC Polytech campuses
