POSITION TYPE  TERM (1 Year – to July 1, 2026), FULL-TIME (Tues – Sat, 10 am – 6 pm)

BACKGROUND:

The Cultural Helper will provide opportunity and encouragement for relatives to participate in traditional teachings, ceremonies, events, and activities by organizing, coordinating and/or facilitating activities under the direction of the Coordinator. The incumbent will act in accordance with the Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre’s Code of Honour and Astum Api Niikinaahk’s service philosophy of providing harm reduction trauma informed support and assistance to our relatives. They will encourage the relatives to view themselves as a critical part of the Astum Api Niikinaahk community.

QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Extensive traditional knowledge and practice.
  • Post-Secondary or Indigenous studies diploma/degree or appropriate combination of education and experience accepted.
  • Recognized and respected within Indigenous communities for providing traditional leadership, spiritual and cultural support and care to individuals and community.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Indigenous resources and an understanding of Indigenous cultural needs.
  • Ongoing involvement with Indigenous culture and traditions, comprehensive knowledge, understanding and awareness of Indigenous traditions, ceremony, teachings, and practices.
  • Related experience in working with individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining an effective working relationship with Indigenous and non-Indigenous gender-diverse populations.
  • Trained in trauma-informed care and harm reduction practices.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention and risk management strategies – Non-violence crisis intervention; CPR, Mental Health First Aid; Naloxone administration; AED defibrillator use; medication distribution.
  • Having a vehicle would be an asset and a Valid Class 5 Manitoba Drivers License.
  • Must provide current (within the last three months) Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Query, Child Abuse Registry Check & be subject to a Prior Contact Check.
