Position Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Education is the Manitoba First Nations Education Table Lead who is responsible for leading and coordinating the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) education initiatives, including the reassertion of First Nations jurisdiction in the area of Education, and the advocacy, strategic planning, management and the ongoing development of a First Nations education framework with Manitoba First Nations and other key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of a First Nations approach to transform education and reassert jurisdiction.
  • Foster a renewed nation-to-nation relationship between First Nations and Canada.
  • Collaborate with Canada to establish federal recognition legislation for First Nations education laws.
  • Represent the AMC in provincial, regional, and national education initiatives, processes, and negotiations.
  • Lobby to address education challenges and draft resolutions for political consideration.
  • Direct and monitor education initiatives to ensure alignment with timelines, budgets, and mandates.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of negotiation strategies for education issues and funding changes.
  • Provide advice on problem-solving and resolving education-related issues.
  • Prepare written reports on education activities and outcomes for the Grand Chief, AMC Chiefs Committee on Education, senior management, and working groups/committees.
  • Develop and maintain networks with Chiefs, Councils, education authorities, tribal councils, and related organizations.
  • Liaise with Manitoba First Nations Executive Directors/Managers on education initiatives.
  • Monitor research and policy developments impacting education.
  • Provide updates and reports on educational issues on an annual, quarterly, and monthly basis.
  • Coordinate meetings of education directors, working groups, and committees to address specific education issues.
  • Perform other duties as directed to support First Nations education initiatives.

Qualifications

Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of five years of demonstrated diverse work experience in the field of education.
  • Experience working with and comprehensive understanding of Manitoba First Nations, Manitoba First Nations education reform strategies, and the mandate and role of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
  • Knowledge of First Nations Treaty-Crown relationship and histories and knowledge of constitutional, legal, legislative and political framework that impacts on First Nations.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture, history and issues.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills with the ability to work effectively in a First Nations environment.
  • Proficient in developing written communications and delivering oral presentations effectively.
  • Excellent skills in analysis, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in utilizing project management techniques and methodologies.
  • Fluency in a First Nations language is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel as required.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Current satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry Check.
