POSITION TYPE FULL-TIME
Anisininew Okimawin is seeking an Indigenous Court Worker to support Island Lake Anisininew members who may be in conflict with the Criminal Justice System. The Indigenous Court Worker will work within the Reclaiming Our Ways (Restorative Justice) Program. The Indigenous Court Worker is responsible for liaising between the Court and Anisininew members to ensure they are provided with fair, equitable, culturally relevant and responsive treatment while navigating the Criminal Justice System.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Work under the direction and supervision of the Restorative Justice Coordinator.
- Meet with clients to assess needs and prepare for court activities.
- Provide advocacy, support, education and navigation of the court system, legal resources and other information to clients.
- Explain natures of the charge(s), court procedures, client rights and responsibilities, sentencing and restorative justice options to clients.
- Maintain a filing system of services provided for tracking and statistical recording purposes.
- Assist in following through with any recommendations of the Court, Chief and Council, Justice Committee or Elders which can include, sharing circles, mediation, conflict resolution, community service work, etc.
- Maintain accurate case notes, reports and administrative documentation.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Grade 12 Diploma or equivalency.
- Must be fluent in Anisininew and provide interpretation and translation for the client and the Court.
- Possess a valid Manitoba Drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle. Must be able to travel to circuit courts.
- Experience with court processes and proceedings.
- Experience working with youth and adults in support, advocacy or intervention roles.
- Ability to travel for work, meetings and training.
- Must be able to obtain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), a satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check and a satisfactory Adult Abuse Registry Check upon hiring.
- Proficient computer skills and the ability to use Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
