POSITION TYPE TERM, FULL-TIME, 35 HOURS/WEEK (Mon – Fri, 8 am – 4 pm)

Reporting to the Program Manager, ICT, the Instructional Assistant/Lab Technician position performs duties in both positions to support the Network and Systems Administrator program depending on program needs.

Instructional Assistant: Responsible for providing instructional support, lab supervision and test invigilation to students under the general directions of the Academic Coordinator and Program Faculty; assisting in supporting students’ independent learning. The IA facilitates the inclusion of students in learning opportunities and encourages students to become independent learners and members of the classroom, school, and community.

Lab Technician: Acts as a first-level responder to user service requests (hardware and software); sets up computers for staff and students, creating and modifying computer images as necessary; assists in the setup and administration of the remote learning environment and other services in a multi-location setting. Responsible for program IT systems and specific projects assigned by Faculty and/or the Program Manager.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Instructional Assistant:

  • Monitor and supports students during independent lab time.
  • Reinforce content provided by the instructor.
  • Support instructor with lab assessment, exam marking and data entry to LMS.
  • Support instructor with exam administration and invigilation.
  • Assist and monitor students in the development of their theoretical and practical skills.
  • Assist in the review and reinforcement of program materials assigned by the teacher.
  • Meet standards of professional and ethical conduct in relation to students, families and colleagues.
  • Follow guidelines and requirements to protect the safety and well-being of students.
  • Assist in reinforcing and enforcing Institute and classroom policies to students.

 Lab Technician:

  • Monitor servers and network equipment, when necessary, for correct operation.
  • Check and perform network services (such as backups and restores, updates) when necessary, on NetLab, ProxMox, Linux and Windows servers.
  • Assist Instructors on classroom reconfiguration and cabling and setting up lab network topology.
  • Together with an assigned Instructor:
    • plan for the setup, distribution, updating and documentation of student and staff workstations;
    • plan and implement the updating of computer images to ensure up-to-date software and patches are distributed in a timely, regular manner;
    • contribute to the IT planning process.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

A combination of related education and experience may be considered.

  • Post-secondary credential from a recognized institution in a field that is strongly related to the respective program subject matter.
  • Current related certification(s) from a recognized industry/corporate trainer, depending on program needs, are considered an asset.
  • Certificate in Adult Education is considered an asset.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 to 2 years’ related industry experience.
  • Experience in instructing adult learners, including classroom management, student evaluation, and lesson planning, is considered an asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office is considered an asset.
  • Experience delivering content using online learning tools, specifically D2L’s BrightSpace an asset.
