POSITION TYPE PART-TIME, 20 HOURS/WEEK
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Plans, prepares and delivers lessons based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) document and Essential Skills in thematic modules.
- Designs and produces teaching materials and adapts existing materials to work within themes selected by each class. Continually reviews these lesson plans and materials to ensure their appropriateness and currency.
- Guides students in developing language learning portfolios throughout each session, assesses students’ benchmark levels on an ongoing basis, explaining the purpose and value to assessment and devoting class time to the process: i.e. uses Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA).
- Maintains current knowledge of technology and instructional practices that relate to the use of technology. Utilizes materials and resources effectively to maximize benefits to students and the Institution.
Instruction
- Encourages a learner-centered approach, ensuring that students are actively engaged in language learning tasks during each lesson. Provides direction regarding students’ educational goals and individual growth related to language learning.
- Carries out assessments of students’ needs in terms of theme, topic and language issues and addresses students’ needs, interests and concerns based on these assessments.
- Uses appropriate, creative and varied instructional methods to accommodate the learning styles of individual students.
Classroom Environment
- Creates a positive learning environment by consistently being prepared for class, motivating students to accomplish educational and personal goals and providing opportunities for feedback.
- Fosters a positive atmosphere of respect and trust in the classroom.
Reporting
- Develops and maintains accurate, informative and relevant student records of attendance and progress including a record of assessments for each student as laid out in the ESL staff orientation handbook.
- Produces CLB Student Progress reports and conducts student meetings at the designated reporting periods.
Professional Development
- Maintains and follows a professional development plan to facilitate professional learning and improve one’s own ability to fulfill job responsibilities more effectively and/or efficiently.
- Attends regular team and staff meetings.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
A combination of related education and experience may be considered.
- Holds a Canada TESL certificate from an institution recognized by TESL Canada.
- A degree in a related field.
- Holds, or is working on obtaining, Introduction to Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) for Classroom Instructors from Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks.
- Active member of a professional ESL organization, such as TESLMB or other TESL Canada approved organizations.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- Adult education skills and experience.
- Experience working in an IRCC funded language program for newcomers.
