POSITION TYPE  TERM (1 Year), FULL-TIME

OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Program Supervisor, Support Worker will work full-time hours in Memengwaa Youth Transitional Housing. This position is responsible for working collaboratively with team members to support youth capacity building and skill development. The key objective of this role is to support youth transitioning to independent living.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide on-site support for youth living in the home to enhance and pursue mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellness.
  • Organize social and recreational activities for youth both on-site and in the community.
  • Encourage youth to engage in community participation through supporting involvement in community lead activities, special events, volunteering, etc.
  • Coordinate and/or facilitate group activities or workshops; engage youth in programming as per guidance from the Youth Transition Workers.
  • Communicate with Youth Workers to identify the unique goals of each youth and collaborate to assist youth to pursue goals.
  • Support on-site life skills development by guiding youth through tasks such as household chores, cooking, maintenance, etc.
  • In partnership with other program team members, help ensure youth maintain their home in a way that meets health and safety requirements.
  • Support off-site life skills development by assisting youth to attend appointments, access resources, such as ID, or complete grocery shopping; empower youth to access resources independently over time.
  • In partnership with the Youth Transition Worker, assist youth with researching and applying for school, work, or other programs.
  • Intervene in crises in a calm and effective manner, including supporting youth to access appropriate and immediate resources.
  • Maintain accurate and complete written records, document incidents as required.
  • Attend training as directed and participate in team meetings as required.
  • Full time hours are based on program requirements and needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Training in a social services field considered an asset but not required; a combination of previous work experience, lived experience and training will be considered.
  • Clear Child Abuse, Adult Abuse, Vulnerable Persons check, and Criminal records check and Prior Contact Check.
  • Valid MB class 5 Drivers license; access to a vehicle is an asset but not required. Driver Abstract required.
  • ASIST, NVCI, First Aid CPR, and other related training considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or understanding of Indigenous perspectives, First Nations culture and traditional philosophies required.
  • Ability to walk multiple flights of stairs may be required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop effective working relationships with youth and program team members.
  • Experience with child welfare and/or youth again out of care preferred.
  • Knowledge of community resources and ability to connect youth in a care to a variety of resources preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin an asset.
