POSITION TYPE PERMANENT, FULL-TIME
The College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, invites applications for a full-time tenured or probationary (tenure-track) position at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant, Associate or Professor. Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, and Inuit) ancestry is required. Expertise in Indigenous health and Indigenous pedagogy are preferred. The Indigenous Scholar is an academic leader who advances Indigenous knowledge, scholarship, and community engaged research within the university and beyond. The role recognizes Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing as foundational to teaching, research, and service, and values relational, land based, and community driven approaches to scholarship.
LECTURER
An offer of appointment for a term appointment at the rank of lecturer may provide that, contingent upon the approved candidate's satisfactory completion of the Ph.D. in his/her/their discipline (but not later than two (2) years from the date of the appointment). Rank may be changed to Assistant Professor. Duties will be as per below.
ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE / PROFESSOR (INDIGENOUS SCHOLAR)
The College of Nursing, University of Manitoba, invites applications from Indigenous scholars (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) for a tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. This position is part of the University’s commitment to advancing Indigenous achievement, strengthening relationships with Indigenous Nations and communities, and responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action.
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and service in ways that center Indigenous knowledge systems, perspectives, and priorities in nursing and health. The Indigenous Scholar will play a key role in fostering inclusive and culturally safe learning environments and advancing Indigenous-led scholarship that supports health and wellness for Indigenous Peoples.
Responsibilities:
Teaching and Mentorship
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate nursing courses in their area(s) of expertise using in-person, online, and blended modalities. Teaching responsibilities will include supporting the integration of Indigenous knowledges, pedagogies, and approaches within curricula.
The candidate will mentor and supervise graduate students (thesis, dissertation, and/or capstone projects), with a commitment to supporting Indigenous students and building capacity in Indigenous health research and scholarship.
Research and Scholarly Activity
The successful candidate will maintain an active program of research that reflects Indigenous priorities, methodologies, and ways of knowing, and that contributes to improved health outcomes for Indigenous Peoples. This may include community-based, participatory, land-based, and/or distinctions-based approaches to research.
The candidate will conduct independent research and collaborate within interdisciplinary and community-engaged research teams. Evidence of scholarship appropriate to rank may include:
- A clearly defined research program beyond doctoral work;
- Peer-reviewed publications and/or other forms of knowledge dissemination relevant to Indigenous communities (e.g., reports, ceremonies, digital media);
- Success in, or strong potential for, obtaining research funding;
- Meaningful and sustained partnerships with Indigenous Nations, communities, and organizations;
- Contributions to capacity building and mentorship of students, trainees, and colleagues.
Service and Community Engagement
The Indigenous Scholar will contribute to service within the College, University, profession, and broader community. This includes leadership in initiatives that advance Indigenous scholarship, equity, and inclusion, as well as participation in committees and advisory bodies.
A central component of the role will be to build and sustain respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous Nations, communities, and organizations. The candidate will support institutional commitments to Indigenous sovereignty, self-determination, and ethical engagement grounded in respect, reciprocity, and responsibility.
Qualifications:
- A PhD in Nursing or a related health discipline or in progress (Lecturer).
- Eligibility for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
- Demonstrated or emerging program of research relevant to Indigenous health and wellbeing.
- Evidence of scholarly output, which may include peer-reviewed publications and/or community-engaged knowledge dissemination.
- Demonstrated ability or strong potential to obtain competitive research funding.
- Experience building and maintaining respectful relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and partners.
- Proven or emerging excellence in teaching, curriculum development, and supervision at undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing Indigenous knowledges, anti-racism, equity, and culturally safe practices in education, research, and service.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in academic and community settings.
For appointment at the Associate or Full Professor rank, applicants must demonstrate:
- A well-developed and sustained program of research;
- Evidence of research impact in Indigenous health and/or community contexts;
- A strong track record of funding and scholarly contributions;
- Recognition at the national and/or international level;
- Demonstrated leadership in mentoring, service, and community engagement.
