POSITION TYPE   PERMANENT, FULL-TIME, 37.5 HOURS/WEEK

Neeginan College of Applied Technology is seeking a skilled and motivated Assistant Welding Instructor to support the delivery of high-quality welding training in a safe, inclusive, and culturally supportive learning environment. The Assistant Instructor will work closely with the Lead Welding Instructor to help students build the technical, theoretical, and workplace readiness skills required for entry-level employment in the welding and fabrication industry.

Position Overview

The Assistant Welding Instructor will support daily instruction, shop demonstrations, student coaching, and assessment activities within the Industrial Welding program. This role combines hands-on shop work, safety instruction, and learner support to ensure students gain confidence and competence with key welding processes, tools, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum Support

  • Assist in delivering instruction for foundational and advanced welding processes, including:
    • General workplace and welding safety
    • Oxyfuel welding and cutting
    • SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) – all positions
    • GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) – 1G, 2G (flat, horizontal)
    • FCAW/MCAW (Flux Core/Metal Core Arc Welding) – all positions
  • Support instruction in WHMIS, First Aid, and basic computer fundamentals.
  • Demonstrate proper use of shop tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Assist students in understanding and applying WPS (Weld Procedure Specifications) and WPDS (Weld Procedure Data Sheets).

Technical & Practical Skill Development

  • Coach students to:
    • Safely identify and operate metal fabricating tools and machines.
    • Use appropriate measuring tools and understand both Metric and Imperial systems.
    • Interpret welding symbols and basic shop drawings.
    • Transfer drawings accurately onto raw materials.
    • Weld various metal gauges using SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and MCAW processes.
    • Cut metals using Plasma and Oxy-Acetylene systems.
    • Grind, finish, and polish metals to professional standards.
  • Reinforce correct techniques, equipment setup, and strict adherence to shop safety.

Student Support & Evaluation

  • Contribute to a positive, culturally safe, and supportive learning environment.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching and mentorship to help students develop confidence and skill.
  • Assist with theory evaluations, practical assessments, and progress monitoring.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and documentation as required.

Workplace Readiness & Employability

  • Model professional work habits, communication skills, and problem-solving aligned with industry expectations.
  • Collaborate with Employment Services staff to support student work placements and job readiness.
  • Participate in team meetings, student events, and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 or Level 3 Welder Apprentice OR minimum three (3) years of welding or fabrication experience.
  • CWB welding tickets or testing experience an asset but not required.
  • Experience training, mentoring, or supporting apprentices/peers in a shop setting is an asset.
  • Strong safety mindset and willingness to model best practices.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, support learners, and work as part of a team.
  • Commitment to Indigenous education and creating a welcoming, inclusive learning environment.
  • Basic computer skills (email, Word, simple documentation).
