POSITION TYPE CONTRACT (1 Year), FULL-TIME (Shift Work – Days, Evenings)
The Mobile Assist and Connect Team Member – Mental Health Navigator (MAC-MHN) will be an integral role within the Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP), primarily focused on providing mental health support for downtown community members, particularly in responding to non-violent, mental-health-related incidents. Embedded within our MAC24/7 operations, MAC-MHN Team Members enhance our ability to support multi-barriered and at-risk individuals, including those experiencing homelessness. Our core objective is to ensure that marginalized individuals are connected to appropriate mental health services in a timely, supportive, and trauma-informed way.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support MAC247 Team Members in managing and referring complex cases and crisis situations related to mental health.
- Perform outreach duties covering the downtown area and assist potential participants in need of mental health support via foot and mobile patrol.
- Use a holistic lens while acting as an advocate for the current needs of participants.
- Assist in conducting voluntary transports to individuals to shelters/medical services.
- Provide short-term case management for participants, connecting with them with medical or mental health professionals and other resources as necessary.
- Collaborate with all teams to ensure continuity of care.
- Share specialized knowledge, best practices, and insights to mentor less experienced staff.
- Support on-duty supervisors (and other teams) regarding mental health related matters as required.
- Comply with strict confidentiality, privacy guidelines and legislation.
- Maintain awareness of current Mental Health legislation, standards of care and crisis management.
- Complete participant intakes in both community and drop in settings.
- Foster and maintain excellent relationships with other professionals in order to coordinate a range of services for participant needs and create an efficient process.
- Maintain files, case notes, and daily statistics.
- Incorporate a supportive and positive teamwork mindset in execution of work.
- Demonstrate awareness of how personal values may impact the work while prioritizing participants needs.
- Demonstrates proactive engagement in continuing education by staying informed about emerging research, best practices, and evolving standards in mental health care.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum two years of relevant lived, work and/or volunteer experience working with vulnerable populations preferred.
- Previous training in the following is considered an asset: Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST); Valid First Aid Level C CPR.
- Post-secondary education in a related field is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of relevant mental health resources and community support resources preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with independent decision-making and complex problem solving.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Physical ability to be on foot and carry out the duties of the position which includes standing for long periods of time and walking several kilometers daily in all weather conditions.
- Excellent organizational, teamwork, and networking skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous people’s history, decolonized practices, including the negative legacy of residential schools and the role of social determinants of health.
- Able to articulate intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights and anti-racism.
- Valid class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License required.
- This role is subject to a Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Adult and Child Abuse Registry Check, to be produced prior to commencing employment.
